WARSAW - POLAND
Warsaw is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River roughly 370 kilometers from both the Baltic Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains. Warsaw is the 8th largest city in the European Union by population. Warsaw is also known as the "phoenix city", as it was completely destroyed during World War II, and rebuilt with the effort of Polish citizens. Warsaw's mixture of architectural styles reflects that turbulent history. Warsaw was razed to the ground by bombing raids and planned destruction. After liberation, most of the historical buildings were thoroughly reconstructed. Many large modern buildings have risen to create the now almost famous Warsaw skyline. Large hotels suitable for leisure and business tourism groups flock the city, to make it an excellent destination for conferences and travels. In 1995, the Warsaw Metro opened. With the entry of Poland into the European Union in 2004, Warsaw is currently experiencing the biggest economic boom of its history. The opening match of UEFA Euro 2012 is also scheduled to take place in Warsaw.
